March 1-4, 2007, San Francisco, CA, USA

Ravi Thomas

  • Application of newer diagnostic testing and therapeutic decisions should be strongly evidence based
  • The best "neuroprotector" available still, is the lowering of IOP
  • In India population based screening for glaucoma is neither economically nor logistically possible
  • Detection of "in our face glaucoma" by opportunistic screening (clinic) is currently the method of choice
  • FDP, in the screening mode, has a high sensitivity and specificity for detection of glaucomatous field defects
  • In India chronic angle closure glaucoma is at least as common as primary open angle glaucoma which should be a diagnosis of exclusion
  • There was good clinical agreement between SITA and Full Threshold in glaucoma diagnosis
  • As expected, Xalatan and Alphagan have been found to be effective in Indian eyes
